The Story Behind Denim Day:
In 1992, an 18-year-old in Rome accused her driving instructor of rape. Though he was convicted, Italy’s Supreme Court overturned the ruling in 1998, arguing that because she wore tight jeans, she must have helped remove them, making it consensual. Outraged, women in the Italian Parliament protested by wearing jeans, inspiring the first Denim Day in 1999, now recognized worldwide to stand against victim-blaming.
